Origin of The Nation’s Best Sausage Bread

Sandy first created the special secret ingredient sausage bread in Minneapolis is 1977 as a winter comfort food for family and friends.

Slowly, over many years, she baked it for parties, wedding, tailgates, -- occasions where people were gathering to celebrate a graduation, home football or other game, weddings and birthdays.

In these years, she has baked 2,008 loaves of the bread, slicing it into bit size pieces at times, single pieces, whole loaves and even mini loaves. This means 3,012 pounds of sausage, 2,008 loaves of bread dough, 2,008 pounds of mozzarella cheese. Right. A pound of cheese and a pound and a half of sausage in every loaf!

Sandy’s looks have changed over the years and she now is a striking Mother of seven children and seven grandchildren spread across the nation.

Needing new challenges, she has embarked on building a business around the bread. It is called simply Sandy’s Sausage Bread and is a hearty combination of sweet Italian sausage, mozzarella cheese, and “special “ herbs and seasonings that makes longtime consumers laud it with comments like these:

“As a U of M graduate, when I think of Ann Arbor, I think of football Saturdays and the famous Sandy’s Sausage Bread. A trip to the Big House would not be complete without the amazing taste of sausage and cheese cooked to perfection inside of some fabulous dough.”
